U.S. Army Body Composition Standards (AR 600-9)
The Army Body Fat Calculator implements the official U.S. Army body composition assessment standards as outlined in Army Regulation 600-9. This calculation method is used to determine if soldiers meet the Army's body fat standards when they exceed the screening weight.
Army Body Fat Standards
Maximum Allowable Body Fat Percentages:
- Males (Age 17-20): 20%
- Males (Age 21-27): 22%
- Males (Age 28-39): 24%
- Males (Age 40+): 26%
- Females (Age 17-20): 30%
- Females (Age 21-27): 32%
- Females (Age 28-39): 34%
- Females (Age 40+): 36%
Army Height/Weight Screening Tables
Before body fat assessment, soldiers must first be screened against the Army Weight Control Program standards:
- Height and weight measurements taken in the morning
- Soldiers must be measured in standard physical fitness uniform
- Those exceeding weight standards proceed to body fat testing
- Regular screening conducted as part of physical fitness tests
Proper Measurement Techniques
Neck Measurement:
- Measure just below the larynx
- Looking straight ahead
- Shoulders down and relaxed
- Record to nearest ½ inch
Waist Measurement:
- Males: Measure at navel level
- Females: Measure at the narrowest point
- Take at end of normal exhale
- Keep tape parallel to ground
Hip Measurement (Females Only):
- Measure at largest horizontal circumference
- Take measurement around buttocks
- Keep tape parallel to ground
- Record to nearest ½ inch
Army Body Composition Program (ABCP)
Soldiers not meeting standards may be enrolled in the ABCP, which includes:
- Mandatory nutrition education
- Exercise program participation
- Regular progress assessments
- Command-referred medical evaluation
- Monthly body fat assessments
Administrative Actions
Failure to meet standards may result in:
- Flag on personnel actions
- Enrollment in ABCP
- Potential separation proceedings
- Impact on promotions and schools
Exemptions
Temporary exemptions may be granted for:
- Pregnancy and postpartum
- Medical conditions
- Combat deployments
- Special duty assignments
